If you've also concluded “I'm not disciplined enough”, you're not alone in that.

Where you are now

Could what you're missing be links, not discipline? Useful plans exist in abundance, and they suffer only from a lack of execution. You are not short of goals. You are short of the mechanism that converts them.

And it costs you the goal itself. Whoever jumps straight from a goal to tasks skips what lies between them, and when one link does not fit with the rest, everything stalls. It doesn't take longer. It stalls.

As long as the links are missing, another decision at a team meeting won't move it, and the conclusion will again be “I'm not disciplined enough”. I once told myself “it's temporary” too, and felt more and more worn out by that work.

Who's talking to you: Axel Jedlitschka

In 2024 I went back to work as a bartender, to top up my income on weekends. I told myself it was temporary, and at the same time I felt more worn out by that work, by the profession and by the industry.

One Friday I finished a shift in the afternoon, and on the drive home I felt the pain in my lower back even while sitting. I decided to talk to the owner of the place and tell her I would help her get through the holiday season, and after that I'm done. I'm against “everything will be okay”. My correction: “If you do something about it, then everything will be okay”.

What to demand

  • Intention or goal

Tell whether your goal is only an intention, or whether there is something underneath it that actually delivers it.

  • Where it's broken

Draw the full ladder of your business on one sheet of paper, and see where it is broken.

  • Which target first

Identify which of the six kinds of target any intention belongs to, and which kind must never come first.

  • A sentence that is a target

Take a sentence that looks like a target, say that it is not one, and fix it.

  • A week that advances

Write a plan for the week that genuinely advances the goal, rather than a list of whatever you feel like doing.

There is a way

This is not about motivation or talent. Between the goal and the task there are ten items in a fixed order, and a task list tries to jump over all of them at once. The ladder builds them from the top down, one at a time, on one area, until you reach an action that someone carries out this week.

  1. Goal.One sentence.
  2. Purpose. One for each direction the goal demands.
  3. Plan.Where it is supposed to be, where it is now, and the bridge between the two.
  4. Targets, down to the level of an action. One action in each target, and a single entity responsible.

A goal without a ladder is a sign on the wall. It hangs there for a year and nothing changes, because underneath it there is nothing.
