If you also work this hard, feel like you’re not getting anywhere, and tell yourself “It still works”, you’re not alone.

Where you are now

Could it be that you’re running three entirely different jobs out of the same head, without telling them apart? When you don’t tell them apart, you decide by what is urgent, and urgent is always production. The client waiting outranks the template that was never written.

And it costs you. Producing without organising works, but badly: it works, and it grinds you down, and you feel it as tiredness, not as a structural problem.

And the cruelest failure arrives just when things are going well. Growth without a foundation: as soon as the business begins to boom, the boom itself collapses.

Who’s talking to you: Axel Jedlitschka

The hardest part of the move was a change in perspective: understanding that I can get by even if I am alone, and have to market myself, sell my service and deliver it to people.

I told myself I would find the way, as long as I kept at it and didn’t give up. But marketing, selling and delivering on your own are three different jobs in one head. That is why I’m against “It still works”: it is working, and it is grinding you down.

What to demand

  • Three functions

Name the three functions, and see which one exists in your business and which is missing.

  • Drive or organise

Tell driving production apart from organising towards it, and recognise what happens when the second is missing.

  • Build or produce

Tell work that builds and maintains apart from production work, and see why mixing them is expensive.

  • Your symptom

Diagnose what you are living with now against three failure patterns.

  • No more waiting

Stop waiting for the week where you sort everything out, and run production and organising in the same week.

There is a way

Every business runs three functions, even a business of one: the one who drives production and asks what went out today, the one who arranges the flow and asks what is holding it up, and the one who builds and maintains the foundation and asks what has to exist for work to be possible at all. In the booklet they are called hats, because each one is a role you put on.

  1. Mapping. For one week, mark at the end of each day which of the three functions you were in most of the day. Change nothing.
  2. The three tests. How much went out this week, result and not effort. How many of the plans you set actually closed. And whether quantity per person is up, quality is up, and there is no wasted internal load.
  3. An hour in the diary.Set a fixed hour a week for the weakest function, by name, four weeks ahead.
  4. Three time horizons.Immediate, medium and long, in the same week. You organise while you produce, not instead.

A pilot and copilot with no aeroplane: if you try to operate a business that is not there, nothing happens. Someone has to put the aeroplane there, and get the other two flying it well.

The way, in one booklet

Questions?

How do I get the booklet?

You leave your details, and a thank-you page opens right away with a button to download the booklet as a PDF.

Is it really free?

Yes. No credit card, and no chapter is held back for payment.

I don’t have time to read 50 pages.

Run the three tests on last week, not on next week. What already happened tells you more than what you are planning.

Will I get spam or phone calls?

Your details are used to send you the booklet and to follow up on it. Marketing messages are sent only if you ticked the consent box, and you can unsubscribe at any time. You can also ask to see, correct or delete your details.

A free booklet, so it must be an ad?

The booklet is complete, and no chapter in it is held back for payment. Every quote in it is anchored to a line in the source: 41 anchors, checked in the original Hebrew edition.

I’m on my own in the business.

Even if there is only one person in the business, they still need some idea of organisation. The number of people only decides how many heads the three functions are spread across.

I’ll stop for a week and sort everything out.

There is no such week. It gets postponed every month, and that goes on for years. You organise while you produce.

Where do I get help?
