If you ran a campaign, it did not work, and you're about to improve an advertisement for the fifth time, you're not alone.

Where you are now

Could it be that what's hurting you is the belief that “the words or the pictures are all that are of importance”? As long as you think that way, all the effort goes into a layer that is only one part out of five, and advertising brings low returns or little interest.

And it costs you money. A campaign like that dead-ends all the time and becomes too expensive, because you pay several times over for every customer, and buy each one again every time.

As long as the part that's broken in your promotion stays as it is, the campaign keeps dead-ending, even after the next ad fix. I stood there too, with a Facebook ad for a sales page and 2 sales.

Who's talking to you: Axel Jedlitschka

In March 2021 I bought a marketing course and started marketing someone else's digital product. I ran a Facebook ad for a sales page, and I made 2 sales from it. It wasn't stable, because I was at the start of my path as a freelancer, and I left with what I learned there: writing copy, marketing, and the principles of marketing and distribution.

Later, at a company that sold business consulting services, I built a system for analysing a business forecast, and it served the company's marketing and sales very well. That's where I understood that I'm really good at the admin work of a business, and that I have knowledge every business needs. I'm not against ads. I'm against the belief that “the words or the pictures are all that are of importance”.

What to demand

  • Look in the right place

Look for the failure where it actually sits, rather than in the ad.

  • Know what's missing

Identify which part of your promotion is missing, even if it isn't the one you wanted to work on.

  • How much to promote

Know what should set the size of your promotion, and what should not.

  • A list worth money

Know who goes on your customer list, who never comes off it, and why it is worth money.

  • One number to measure

Know which number to measure, and why the quality of the ad is not in it.

There is a way

Improving the ad touches only two of the five basics that successful promotion rests on: accumulating the identities of people, and offering them something they will buy. The other three are not marketing at all: something worth offering, consistent execution, and delivering what was offered. “All five must exist for promotion to be successful”, so when one of the three is broken, improving the ad doesn't fix it.

  1. A score for each basic.Give each of the five basics in your business a score from 1 to 5, three seconds each.
  2. The lowest is the work. The basic with the lowest score is what needs work, even if it isn't the one you wanted.
  3. Five questions, in writing.Answer five questions in writing, and the one whose answer is vaguest is this month's work.

A campaign that looked excellent, was written properly and was aimed at the right people, and brought in nothing, did not fail because of what was in it. It failed because of what was not underneath it.

The way, in one booklet

Why the Campaign Failed · a booklet by Axel Jedlitschka

A diagnosis of which of the five basics is broken in your business, and what to do about it, so you can stop improving the ad for the fifth time.

  • Every quote in the booklet is anchored to a line in the source, and 81 anchors were checked against it with no failures (original Hebrew edition)
  • Three claims that did not survive the check against the source were removed from the booklet or corrected
  • Where the source qualifies its own figures, the booklet quotes the reservation
  • 10 chapters, from the five basics to seven named failures
  • A self-test in five questions, which finds the basic that is broken
  • A practice and application section with five exercises
  • A self-check at the end of every chapter
  • A glossary
  • A summary in ten lines

Questions?

How do I get the booklet?

You leave your details, and a thank-you page opens right away with a button to download the booklet as a PDF.

Is it really free?

Yes. No credit card, and no chapter is held back for payment.

I don't have time to read 48 pages.

Chapter 1 will tell you why, and Chapter 2 will tell you what to look at instead. The diagnosis itself takes three seconds per basic.

Will I get spam or phone calls?

Your details are used to send you the booklet and to follow up on it. Marketing messages are sent only if you ticked the consent box, and you can unsubscribe at any time. You can also ask to see, correct or delete your details.

A free booklet, so it must be an ad?

The booklet is complete, and no chapter in it is held back for payment. Every quote in it is anchored to a line in the source, and 81 anchors were checked against it with no failures (original Hebrew edition).

In my case the problem really is the ad.

Maybe, and the booklet does not say the words don't matter. But if you improved the ad and nothing happened, that is evidence, not failure: it tells you the problem is in a different layer.

Where can I get help?
